  4. Two stars seems a little harsh for this CD, but the 4 1/2 star rating it got from Downbeat is also way out of line. 3 1/2 would be more like it. Although CACTUS OF KNOWLEDGE is not up to the standard of Abou-Khalil's best work, there are at least three tracks that I like well enough to include on my personal mix tapes: "Fraises Et Crème /5(12).

  5. Mar 10,  · When Rabih Abou-Khalil rehearsed his band in New York prior to the recording of the companion CD, it became evident that the visual potential of this group was also unusual. The regular DVD technique positions the viewer in front of the orchestra, but ENJA's 6-channel version has the viewer move within the band, taking an active part in the /5(12).

  6. Rabih Abou-Khalil's ninth Enja release features one of his most expansive lineups to date -- 12 pieces in all, including oud, brass, woodwinds, cello, and almapazesmitur.latitelsimpratattrerpwhistmarpvolraga.co's quite a departure from 's austere almapazesmitur.latitelsimpratattrerpwhistmarpvolraga.co the tempos are bright, the unison lines darting and difficult, the improv heated, the tonal combinations ever-changing.

  7. The Cactus of Knowledge may not be one of Abou-Khalil's crowning efforts, but it's a fine album, another undeniable testament to the breadth of his musical interests. Like all of Abou-Khalil's music, it ignores and transgresses political, ethnic and geographical boundaries to celebrate a global music that embraces differences by letting them play together.

  8. Whether the title is a joke or not, we can see the main (and more numerous than usual) musicians taking turn sitting in a sofa next to a horrible toy cactus in a studio hall. The album develops a Klezmer-Gypsy Jazz feel, a consequence of an 8-man brass section, not just in the opening two tracks, goes even further in the Got To Go Home piece/5(2).
